In these Wellness Training programs we will take a look at your life. How do you feel? Think about that for a moment… How do you truly feel? Make mental note, your answers are a reflection of your life. Are you overwhelmed? Exhausted? Do you wake up rested or is caffeine needed to start your day? Do you nourish your body as you should or make poor food choices, do you skip meals, eat late at night, or eat heavy meals? Do have a practice that helps your body restore, rest and deal with stress?

The programs below will discuss topics that will educate you how to take better care of yourself, not only for now but for the extended future. Topics will vary from program to program and each 8 week will cover different topics. You will learn how to prepare tasty, healthy and easy meals. Learn how to have restful sleep and woke in the morning refreshed, with more energy throughout the day. You will learn the basics of your personal Ayurvedic constitution and how the environment plays a part in your health. You will also learn practices and techniques, such as meditation and body breathing, that will help you to manage stress. All of the techniques are well with in your means and are easy to incorporate into your life.  Remember this is your life and what you do now will impact your future. 8 Week Yoga Therapy Workshop to Find Beauty, Strength and Balance after 45!

Mondays 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. September 21st – November 16th 

What does it mean to be a woman today? Do you feel strong, balanced and vibrant? Or are you stressed, over-worked, fatigued, anxious and depleted? Do you know the importance of stillness and rest? Do you know how to truly rest?
What is rest? For you, is it kicking back with a beer or glass of wine? Watching a favorite TV show? Going to the gym? So many of us confuse rest with recreation. Then when we need rest we turn to stimulating, recreational activities. We look for a “fix” to keep us going and after a while more and more is needed to keep us stimulated. Eventually, we become restless and mistake restlessness with a need to do more and more. When we finally slow down we complain about being bored; that’s because we no longer know what stillness and peace feel like. Why? Because we are running from life; the “life” stuff that is following us and will follow us until we either slow down or become sick. If we truly want to change and find peace and health we need to find rest!
This series of yoga therapy classes teaches women how to slow down, rest, restore and become aware of our true nature, which is peace. It will use yoga poses, meditation, body mapping, mudras (hand gestures), pranayama (breath practices), guided awareness exercises, and more to provide support, reflection and self-discovery. Class themes will change from week to week and will be based on the systems of the body and the challenges that women face (identity, growth and change, balancing life, mental and emotional changes and so on). We will also discuss ways to work on creating a personal yoga practice, balancing life, adopting practical Ayurvedic practices and more. All levels are welcome in this class.

8 Week Yoga Therapy Workshop to Find Beauty, Strength and Balance after 45!

The class will be designed for women 45+. Focus on peri-menopause, menopause and easing gracefully into your golden years! We will practice pranayama (breathing), meditation, yoga nidra, Ayurvedic practices and yoga therapy practice.

Aging gracefully isn’t always easy. It takes some discipline and consistency, especially when the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause set in. We lose flexibility, balance and strength, and aches and pains pop up out of nowhere. With yoga and ayurveda, we can learn to feel and look younger longer.
Menopause is when a woman’s menstrual period permanently stops, and peri-menopause is when reproductive hormones naturally begin to decline in our 30s and 40s. The symptoms that come with this change-in-life are associated with the decline of hormones (hormonal imbalance), and as a result physical and psychological changes occur gradually or abruptly. In Western culture, menopause treated as an illness rather than a natural life transition, resulting in a lack of balance in our life: physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Menopause can be a source of stress and discomfort for women over that age 45 and can disturb the flow our daily life; therefore, it should be managed to minimize discomfort. Symptoms of the imbalance include: irregular and painful menstruation, painful intercourse and/or changes in sexual desire, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, urinary problems, changes in appearance, mood swings, such as heightened anxiety and moodiness, sleep disturbances, heart palpitations, backaches and nightly hot flashes. Natural ways to treat menopause symptoms include yoga, meditation, pranayama (breathing techniques) practices, and Ayurveda, the science of health and life using the wisdom of the body to find balance, support vitality, and help live to our full human potential.
Yoga, meditation and pranayama are natural remedies to alleviate the pain associated with the menstrual cycle and menopause. Many women in our society suffer in silence taking pills to reduce pain and to get through the transition, but yoga and Ayurveda practices can help soothe the symptoms without drugs with side effects. The number of women who practice yoga after the age of 45 is on the rise because women realize that yoga is the perfect way to age gracefully and often eliminate the stress that comes from our busy, over-booked lives and in-turn reducing menopausal symptoms.
Yoga, mediation and pranayama can help ease the transition for women:
Reduce stress. Who isn’t looking for stress reduction these days? Yoga, meditation and pranayama reduce anxiety and stress, and also help us to process negative feelings and thoughts in the mind (before they manifest in our bodies). Fluctuation in emotions cause stress and imbalance in our lives. Regular stress management practices lead us toward a peaceful state of mind–calmer, happier, healthier!
Increase range of motion of joints and muscles and increase bone density. Yoga has been proven to help people suffering from problems associated with joints and bones, such as arthritis and bone loss, and prevention is the key to true health.
Decrease physical pain and discomfort due to lack of movement and sedentary lifestyle. Menopausal aches and pains (such as back and neck pain) and chronic pain associated with aging can be decreased with regular exercise. Yoga helps to increase flexibility, strength, and range of motion. Meditation and pranayama (life force) teaches us to become aware of the subtle warning signs that our body gives us before pain becomes an issue.
Decreases hot flashes. During peri-menopause and menopause, hot flashes are a symptom of too much fire in the body. In Ayurveda this fire is caused by an excess pitta. Learning to stay calm, breathe, and move slowly and intentionally reduces this accumulated heat.
Reduces blood pressure. A regular practice reduces high blood pressure and promotes oxygenation in the blood, creating better circulation in the body. Pranayama is used to become aware of stress and to direct the mind away from the outside world in order to focus on what’s happening in the moment.
Dope it up a bit with a little aromatherapy. The healing benefits of aromatherapy oils include releasing old or negative emotions, detoxifying and/or cleansing of feelings and emotions, soothing tense muscles, and helping to balance hormonal fluctuations.
The tentative, general outline for the 8-week Womens Power Yoga Therapy Workshop is as follows: (All sessions vary from week to week.)
  • OPENING: (20-25 min)
    • Theme for the week: Breathing 101: Connection between how we breath and how we live (varies from week to week).
    • Intention: Breathing to promote relaxation and stress relief
    • Education: Facts about breathing, lack of full breath, science-based
    • Ayurveda: Build a routine
    • Body awareness: Body, mind, spirit, emotions, stress, and lack of breath-awareness (avidya), disconnect, and hands-on body work
  • PRACTICE: (40-50 min)
    • Pranayama: breath practice
    • Asana practice: yoga therapy
  • INTEGRATION: (20-25 min)
    • Yoga nidra and guided imagery
    • Relaxation
    • Meditation and Mudras
  • COMPLETION: (5-10min)
    • Affirmation/Intention reflection
    • Homework: Various assignments
