If you have looked for a yoga class and have been scared to try, this is the class for you! Learn the basics of yoga in a group of people that are in the same place in their yoga journey. Each week will start with meditation and move into basic yoga poses to build confidence in your practice of yoga. This class is for folks who have little to no yoga experience!
Peaceful Yoga for Cancer
Yoga and meditation are steps in a positive direction for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers coping with difficult treatments and ongoing side effects. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 10 million Americans alive today have experienced and battled cancer and more than a million people are diagnosed each year. Research studies that have taken place at cancer centers around the world, that have shown yoga and other types of mind-body practices can help improve patient treatment outcomes and quality-of-life. Doctors are now recommending yoga as a way to manage anxiety, depression and overall mental-emotional-physical wellness of their patients. In particular, several studies have been done where patients noticed improved sleep, increased energy and reduced fatigue levels. In 2012, the American Cancer Society recommended up to 150 minutes of exercise per week, with a specific focus on the benefits of yoga and meditation. Yoga can reduce the chance of cancer by reducing stress, along with many other benefits, and the chance of it reoccurring. So More and more cancer survivors are coming to yoga classes to gain these benefits. This yoga class incorporates gentle yoga poses (asanas), special meditation, breathing techniques (pranayama) and other healing practices, to create a mind-body-spirit experience. This class will use supportive practices to create ease and comfort to the body as a result from the disease and its treatment, especially lymph distribution and the immune system, as well as offering relief for the mental challenges. All levels of experience are welcome. We will be offering a class specifically designed to address the special needs of people undergoing treatment for cancer, survivors and caregivers.
Chair Yoga – 6 Week Workshop
Chair yoga is wonderful way to receive the benefits of a yoga practice in a safe and supportive way! The chair becomes an extension of the body. It is a unique yoga practice where yoga positions and poses are adapted through a creative use of a chair and are performed slowly with the breath awareness. This class will help to increase strength, range of motion, stamina, memory, mental awareness, improve circulation and relax the body. The student is able to warm up their body safely and perform yoga poses with more support and stability. Poses are done seated on the chair or the chair is used for support during standing poses, balancing, side extensions, forward and backward bends, and leg and arm stretches. Come and stretch your body and relax your mind! Chair Yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and physical conditions.
